In the winter of 1804 a young Lemhi Shoshone woman named Sacagawea joined the Lewis and Clark Expedition while expecting her first child; captured by Hidatsa raiders and later sold to a French Canadian trapper she became an interpreter. In February 1805 she gave birth to Jean Baptiste in a freezing Dakota winter and carried him across 8000 miles of uncharted wilderness.
