Although they are abundant and winter throughout Texas, they are often overlooked during winter and migration. They are often solitary and found in wet fields, marshes, and bogs. Their mottled plumage is excellent camouflage among the grass and sedges. It is usually only during migration that they are seen on the banks of ponds and lakes.
